Top Gear Transmissions Liverpool Ltd
The workshop bays at Top Gear Transmissions, Liverpool, where differentials are rebuilt

Differential repairs in Liverpool

Differentials are a dying trade and most garages will not open one. We have a dedicated diff area within the main workshop, trained engineers who rebuild them week in, week out, and customers who travel from well outside Liverpool because of it.

A dedicated differential workshop, rare in the North West

Most garages will not touch the inside of a differential. Setting up a crown wheel and pinion takes measuring tools, patience and experience that have largely disappeared from the trade. We kept them.

Top Gear Transmissions has a dedicated differential area within the main workshop, where trained engineers strip, rebuild and set up diffs for most makes and models. It is one of the few dedicated diff facilities in the North West, which is why a steady stream of customers, garages and fleet operators travel to Aigburth Road from well beyond Liverpool.

Symptoms of differential failure

  • Whining or howling at speed that changes with acceleration and overrun, the classic worn crown wheel and pinion noise.
  • Clunking on tight turns or when taking up drive, from worn planet gears, thrust washers or a failing limited-slip mechanism.
  • Vibration that rises with road speed regardless of engine revs, often pinion bearings or a worn propshaft joint.
  • Oil leaks from the pinion seal or driveshaft seals, cheap to fix early and terminal if the diff runs dry.

Diff noise is often misdiagnosed as wheel bearings or tyre roar. We road test before we quote, so you pay to fix the actual fault.

Repair and reconditioning, done on the bench

A differential rebuild at Top Gear means stripping the unit, inspecting every gear and bearing, replacing what is worn, and then the part that matters: setting the preload, backlash and tooth contact pattern up correctly on the bench. That set-up is the difference between a quiet diff that lasts and one that howls again within a year.

We rebuild differentials for rear-wheel-drive cars, vans, pickups and 4x4s, covering front, rear and centre diffs, and we repair the driveline faults around them: axle shafts, bearings, seals and propshaft issues.

Trade work welcome

If you run a garage and a diff job has landed on your ramp, we can take the unit on the bench or take the whole vehicle, whichever suits. Plenty of workshops across the North West send us their differential work, and your customer stays yours.

We are transmission specialists across the whole driveline, so if the noise turns out to be the gearbox rather than the diff, you are already in the right place.

This is the place for gearbox repairs, definitely the best. I've had a few done over the years: quality, quick and reliable. These people do what they say. Simply the best. Don't mess with the others, just use these guys.

Frequently asked questions

Can you recondition my differential rather than replace it?

Usually, yes. Most differentials can be rebuilt, with the bearings, seals and preload set up properly on the bench, rather than replaced with a whole new unit. Where the crown wheel and pinion are beyond saving, we will tell you plainly and talk you through the options.

How long does a differential repair take?

Most diff rebuilds are measured in days rather than weeks. The strip-down and inspection happen quickly, and the timescale then depends on parts availability for your axle. We confirm the timescale before you commit to anything.

Do you work on rear-wheel-drive and 4x4 differentials?

Yes. We repair and recondition differentials for most makes and models, including rear-wheel-drive cars, vans, pickups and 4x4s with front, rear and centre diffs. If you are unsure what your vehicle has, call us and we will tell you what is involved.
