What reconditioning actually involves

"Reconditioned" gets used loosely in this trade. Here is what it means in our workshop:

  1. Strip and clean. The gearbox is fully dismantled and every component cleaned and laid out for inspection.
  2. Inspect and measure. Gears, shafts, bearings, synchromesh rings, selector forks and casings are checked for wear, scoring and cracks.
  3. Replace. Bearings, synchro rings and seals are renewed as standard; gears and shafts are replaced where inspection demands it.
  4. Rebuild and check. The box is reassembled to specification, shimmed and adjusted, then turned through every gear and checked before it goes on the shelf or into your car.

That is a re-manufactured unit, not a second-hand box with fresh paint. It is the closest thing to a new gearbox at a sensible cost.

Reconditioned or second-hand: which makes sense?

A reconditioned unit is the right call when you plan to keep the vehicle, when the failure was internal, or when the box has high mileage. Everything that wears has been renewed, and it carries a 12-month / 12,000-mile warranty.

A low-mileage, checked, good quality second-hand box can be the smart, budget-conscious fix for an older car. We hold these in stock too, and every one has been stripped and thoroughly checked before we will sell it. They carry a 28-day warranty and an honest description of what they are.

On the shelf, ready to go

We keep a large stock of reconditioned and checked second-hand manual gearboxes and parts on the shelf. For common applications that means no waiting for a rebuild. Your car is back on the road days sooner.

We supply and fit reconditioned gearboxes locally across Liverpool and the North West. Customers further afield regularly buy units from us too. To be clear, we do not run a delivery service, so customers across the country arrange their own collection or courier. Plenty do, because the rebuild quality is worth the arranging.

Trade supply

Local garages and main dealers buy reconditioned units and gearbox parts from us week in, week out. Many have done for decades. If you run a workshop and want a reliable exchange-unit source, or a fleet account, talk to us.

Brilliant service. They diagnosed the problem within an hour of dropping the car off, replaced the bearings and seals in the gearbox, and had the car back within two working days. Would highly recommend.

Frequently asked questions

What does a reconditioned gearbox mean?

A reconditioned gearbox has been completely stripped, cleaned and inspected, with bearings, synchromesh rings, seals and any worn gears replaced, then reassembled to specification and checked before sale. It is not a used box that has been cleaned up. It is a re-manufactured unit built to do its job properly.

How long does gearbox reconditioning take?

If we have your gearbox type on the shelf, it is usually an exchange. Your old unit comes off, the reconditioned one goes on, often within a day or two. If your own box needs rebuilding from scratch, allow longer. We confirm the timescale before you commit to anything.

What warranty comes with a reconditioned gearbox?

Every reconditioned gearbox we supply carries a 12-month / 12,000-mile warranty, in writing. Low-mileage second-hand boxes, stripped and checked rather than rebuilt, carry 28 days. We publish our exact terms rather than a vague promise that it is guaranteed.
